Q: Blood pressure 150/49 - If I take b.p. lowering med will it lower my diastolic pressure too much?

My blood pressure has recently started to rise.  It varies from 150/55 to 130/39.  Should I be concerned/seek treatment?  What about the ower number?  What would be the most effective treatment.   Am physically active-not overweight. Am 82 and otherwise have no health concerns.  A.K.

Hi AudreyK,

There are different medication options.  Some will have a greater impact on systolic (top number) versus diastolic.  I recommend working with your physician to determine the appropriate treatment option and to monitor your results.  I also recommend making diet and lifestyle changes to lower blood pressure.

All the best,
