Q: I saw on Dr. Oz that high blood pressure is caused by the kidneys sending signals to the heart for more blood. Did I understand that correctly? Can someone explain it?

Hi LaDonna,

I'm not sure what or how Dr. Oz was trying to explain high blood pressure, so I'm not going to try to interpret! However, let me explain that high blood pressure is basically due to narrowed or hardened arteries/veins that cause the heart to have to work harder to circulate blood throughout the body. This includes the blood vessels in the kidneys. As blood vessels in the kidneys become damaged waste removal become less efficient and extra fluid builds up. This extra fluid cause an additional increase in blood pressure. High blood pressure is a leading cause of kidney failure.

All the best,
