Q: Edema with bp medications

I was taking Norvasc and my ankles swelled so badly that I couldnt wear shoes so my doctor put me on Diovan htc....the swelling started going down on the 3rd day but now the swelling is back....Is this a side effect of Diovan HTC?? Also, I gained 13 pounds in 2 weeks......I cant afford the extra pounds...which bp meds will not cause this and the edema.....Thank you!!!!

Hi Jules3535,

The 13 extra pounds is likely due to water retention and once your medication is on track your weight should drop back down.

Here is a link to some information on edema:

I recommend working with your physician to determine an appropriate medication that does not result in edema/swelling.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE.....I AM WORKING WITH MY DOCTOR BUT I HAD TO TELL HER THAT THE EDEMA WAS A SIDE EFFECT OF THE NORVASC.....I TAKE A VERY ACTIVE PART IN THE MEDICATIONS I'M TAKING AND ALWAYS READ UP ON THE SIDE EFFECTS......I AM ALSO HAVING VERY BAD CRAMPS IN MY LEGS, TOES, FINGERS, AND HAVE HORRIBLE PAIN IN MY CHEST AND RIBS...ALSO MY BACK IS KILLING ME......ARE THESE SIDE EFFECTS AS WELL??? I'M BEGINNING TO THINK THAT LIVING WITH THE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IS MUCH EASIER THAN ALL THESE SIDE EFFECTS.....IF THAT'S WHAT IS CAUSING ALL THE AILMENTS.....CAN YOU ADVISE IF THESE WILL GO AWAY OR IS IT SOMETHING THAT I'M GOING TO HAVE TO LIVE WITH.......CAN YOU PLEASE RECOMMEND A BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATION THAT DOESN'T HAVE ALL THE DEBILITATING EFFECTS??

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.....
