Q: Metropolol was controlling high blood pressure. Now,it doesn't.

Five years ago I received two stents in my heart. Following this I had 35 treatments using ECP (External Counterpulsation).  Each year since, I have had nuclear stress tests which have showed good test results. Two years ago I had a carotid artery study done and it showed about 55% blockage; however, I was told this was not enough for Medicare to pay for surgery to clear the artery. The cardiologist added Zetia to Crestor to control my cholesterol. This past fall I had another carotid artery study and it was perfectly normal. All the other tests done were normal.  So, I do not think there presently is a problem with clogged veins and arteries. Last year I did begin to have elevated blood pressure which I controlled with Metropol 25mg until a week ago. During this time, I did try a different blood pressure med but it did not work well. Now, my pressure is elevated anywhere from 145/75 up to 168/83 and I am having severe headaches. This occurs any time even after taking Metropolol. When I go to bed and try to sleep, my ears thump in beat with my heart. Normally, my pressure is around 122/63; but, recently, this is a rare event. Metropolol does not seem to be helping me any more. What do you suggest I do?
