Q: Can Lasix 80mg daily used long term a period of 6 months, cause low potassium and thus kidney failure if potassium supplements are not taken?

My husband was prescribed 80 mg of Lasix a day for a period of about six months, to try and relieve edema in his feet.He was also prescribed potassium which he did not take. Now he has been hospitalized with kidney failure and the side effect is that his daily medications have built up in his system. He also had some test result that said he had muscle breakdown. Is it possible that these things are related to the diuretics?

Hi Smallchange,

Lasix may cause depletion of electrolytes, such as potassium if they are not supplemented. I'm not sure the impact a depletion of potassium would cause to his kidneys. Many times individuals with renal failure need to limit the potassium level of their diet. I recommend discussing further with his physician.
