Q: Conjestive Heart Failure

Hello, My husband was dx with hypertension, congestive heart failure, enlarged heart and a ejection count at 10. He's 36yrs old African American ,weighting 190lbs now. Treating with cardiology for about 5/mos now. Treatments consist of changing his eating habits, no salt, low sodium diet and exercise.

He's allowed 2000mg sodium daily and 65 gal liquid and still no change in BP. Yesterday his bp was 170/130. Spoke with on call nurse and was give more medication to take. As a wife I am very concern and is looking for the best help possible.

Hi Pamela,

It can take ~4-6 months on average for diet and lifestyle changes to have an impact on blood pressure. Stick with the positive changes and continue to work with his physician to adjust medication as needed is the right approach. I also recommend you learn about the DASH diet, which is a very effectivce strategy to lower blood pressure.

All the best,
