Q: What HTN med is best for a black woman with comorbidities?

She is 68yrs old, diabetic, has HTN, high cholesterol, and suffered a stroke about 5 years ago.  She takes metropolol tartrate, amlodipine-besylate/benazepril HCL and just started diovan only because her insurance wouldn't pay for her other medication Hyzaar.  We have a friend of the family recently diagnosed with kidney failure possibly due to taking diovan.  What other medication fits her needs best? She has no heart problems and I think the medication was randomly picked off a list by her doctor(I am not at all putting any "blame" on her doctor). I don't see any other medications with major side effects like diovan.
