Q: Random high blood pressure readings, average around 119/73. 20yrs old, light, active

Hi, I'm a 20 year old 6'1 145lbs, fairly active. I randomely get blood pressure readings that are in the 140-155/75-95 range. I'll check the next day and it will be 119/73, can nerves have that much of an affect on blood pressure?

Hello Kyle,

I'm impressed that as a relatively young adult you take blood pressure readings at all.  Keep up the good work in taking care of your health!

I would not worry tremendously about these higher readings, although I would suggest you make an appointment with your doctor (if you have an established physician).  If you don't, make an initial appointment with an adult medicine doctor (internal medicine doctor) at your convenience to discuss your blood pressure concerns.

Anxiety can absolutely raise your bp significantly if you are anxious when the readings are taken.  I also wonder how you get your BP read, as oftentimes automatic cuffs can be inaccurate.

High blood pressure in young adults is uncommon and generally caused by another disease.  You should be sure to mention to your physician if you are having any other symptoms including flushing, nausea, diarrhea, periods of extremely anxiety.  Be sure to know whether any disease run in your family.

To your health,

Neil MD
