Q: What causes my blood pressure which doesn't decrease but normally beyond 140/90?

I am suffering from a blood pressure that is quite high, 140/90 or 150/100 or 160/100.  I went to a doctor (GP) and he conducted blood tests and prescribed a karvae medicine but after six weeks of medication (75mg daily), I felt nauseated and dizzy.  He referred me to a cardiologist and he told me to stop taking karvae and change it to spiractin 25 (12.5mg daily) because it may have side effects on me.  But after taking the medicine for one week, I still feel the same thing, nausea and dizziness. My blood pressure is still the same, it is not going down.  What am I going to do?  By the way I have a normal cholesterol level.

Incidentally, I also hear my heartbeat sometimes in my left ear and sometimes there is pain in the same area.  Are these symptoms of hypertension?

Hi Dissy,

I recommend you make diet and lifestyle changes to promote blood pressure control and decrease your dependence on medications.  The DASH diet is very beneficial for lowering blood pressure - http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/hbp/dash/new_dash.pdf.
