Q: I have renal failure induced high BP so why am I on Coreg that is for heart patients?

I have had renal failure for 10 years. Lisinopril has always worked great to keep my BP low but recently it was spiking my potassium. My doctor switched me to nephedipin 60mg but it was not controlling my BP. He recently added 6mg twice a day of Coreg to my 60mg of nephedipin. I have read that Coreg is a drug more related to heart disease and coronary problems. So I am wondering why he put me on this drug? One dose of lisinopril used to work perfect for me and now I am taking 3 pills a day instead.

Hi Elizabeth,

Coreg is a beta blocker used to treat high blood pressure and other heart conditions.  You can learn more about it here - http://www.healthcentral.com/high-blood-pressure/search-coreg.html

I recommend you consult your physician to determine the reason for the additional medications if you believe lisinopril was working.

All the best,
