Q: Diurectic blood pressure med prescribed. Diurectic given up. Harm?

My sister was prescribed blood pressure meds with diurectics by physician.  Because she doesn't want to go to bathroom she has given up the diurectic.  She checks her blood pressure and says its normal but hasn't told her physician that she is not taking the diurectic.  Is there any harmin this?

Thank you.

Enid O'Brien,

Thanks for your question.

The only harm would be that her blood pressure might not come down to acceptable levels.

Patients should never stop or alter the dosage of medication without first discussing it with their physician.  Your sister should tell her doctor why she is not taking it.  Other medication, if necessary, can be used to control her pressure.

You should encourage her to contact her doctor and let him/her know.  Certainly, at her next visit, she should let the doctor know, so that he can see what her response is to medication she is actually taking.

I hope this has been helpful.
