Q: Vicodin causes high BP what are best and least least likely pain killers to cause high BP?

Vicodin causes me high BP. Are there any medium strong pain killers that are safer?

I have used low doses Xanax (.5mg/night) for decades so I'm not so worried about stronger "addictive" kinds as long as they don't up my BP.

Hi Dave,

I recommend discussing different options with both your physician and pharmacist. They'll be able to give you more accurate input.

Vicodin is a combination analgesic it has hydrocodone and Tylenol in it. Too much tylenol can cause issues with liver and kidneys. In turn kidney function effects bp. Loratab has less tylenol and than if you move up to oxycodone many have zero other meds besides oxycodone. It is stronger but has the same addictive properties. I have chronic pain and high bp and they are very careful to avoid combos, NSAIDS, and tylenol. oxycodone is for moderate to severe pain the same indication as Vicodin. Depending on how much you are taking you may overdose on tylenol and the FDA has been discussing taking combo pain relivers like vicodin off the market for that very reason. Talk to your doctor and discuss your concerns about too much tylenol (it blocks proglastins but does not reduce inflammation like naprosyn or celebrex which incidently can raise your bp and both can cause a variety of severe side effects like ulcers and organ damage) Best wishes hope this helps.
