Q: Can Avapro be causing my muscle pains?

I have been experiencing extreme pain in my right shoulder and my left elbow areas.  I am experiencing difficulty lifting and carrying things because of this.  I was wondering if Avapro could be the cause of these symptoms.  My physician just changed me to Avapro from Avalide.

Hello Mary Moss,

I doubt it as there are extremely few side effects of Avapro (or irbesartan which is an angiotension receptor blocker).

Even more convincing that your new medication isn't causing your symptoms is that avapro is not really a new medication for you!   Avalide, which didn't cause symptoms, is a combination pill of irbesarten and hydrochlorothiazide.

It sounds like you could have arthritis in your neck.  I suggest you discuss with your physician if a cervical (neck) x-ray or possibly an MRI could help determine the cause of your pain.

To your health,

Neil MD
