Q: I am 47 years old, and currently taking 5 different blood pressure medications. Is this safe?

I am 47 years old, and my doctor has me on 5 different blood pressure medications. I've asked to see a different doctor or a specialist, but he says it is not necessary. Is this safe or should I be worried?

Mel 47,

Thanks for your question.

The important issue here is the need to have your pressure controlled.  If inadequately treated, high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease, vascular disease, and stroke.  Every patient is a unique situation.  Some people require a minimum of medication, while others require many drugs to gain control.

However, if a patient has concerns, or feels uncomfortable, then that patient has the right to see another physician or specialist.  I suggest you try to discuss this with your doctor on your next visit.  If he still refuses, then consider another opinion on your own.

Best wishes.
