  Hi Beverly,   There is not one type of salt that is better for you when diagnosed with high blood pressure over another, what's important is the amount.  You want to limit your salt intake to about 2300 mg or less.  That measures out to 1 teaspoon of salt.  Check with your MD on how much he'd like you to restrict your salt intake.   Eliminating salt completely is nearly impossible, but you can reduce your intake by not adding salt at the table or when preparing foods.  Canned soups and vegetables tend to be high sodium.  Read food labels and opt for "no added salt" alternatives or switch to homemade soups (where you control the ingredients) and frozen/fresh vegetables.    Snacks and fast food also contribute salt.  You want to think when you're dining out and keep health snacks on hand, like fruits and vegetables, versus potato chips and salted nuts.   Here's an article that discusses salt versus potassium when treating high blood pressure - http://www.healthcentral.com/high-blood-pressure/lifestyle-161415-5.html.   All the best, Lisa Nelson, RD, LN Tips to Control High Blood Pressure
