Q: sudden rises in blood pressure

My mother is 92 and good health considering her age. She has been taking RX for high blood pressure for several years and has kept it in a normal range.  About 4 months ago she would start feeling hot and weak and when she took her pressure it would be around 220/110.  We would take her to the ER, they would treat her with IV and within around 30 minutes it would again be normal.  This has happened numerous times- usually around bedtime or early morning.  She has had an ecocardiogram and checked out her kidneys, lots of blood work, urine check.  The only thing that shows is a slight leak in a heart valve.  She has RX for anxiety which she takes some but  doesn't make any difference.  Her cardiologist thinks something is causing this but is really stumped.  Can you give us any ideas?  Thank you.

Hi Nancy, sorry the first response did not go through, please let me know if you ever get an answer to your mothers problem.  I have the same thing, same feeling of getting hot and weak then my B/P suddenly goes sky high, my Dr. thinks it's anxiety attacks, I take metoprolol and xanax, then it returns to normal within an hour, however, later in the eve, my B/P goes way too low 90/60 and can't take anymore bloodpressure med afraid it will drop further.  "what a mystery". then my Dr. put me on zoloft which is suppose to stop these attacks. please take care of mom and give her my regards, maybe we can get an answer for this unusual problem.   thanks!
