Q: What causes fluctuations in blood pressure?

My mother is in her late 60s, very healthy, and usually has normal blood pressure.  Recently it has been fluctuating between being on the high side (164/90) and the low side (94/60).  (I am not totally sure of the the diastolic numbers.)  When her blood pressure drops, she feels weak, fatigued, and light-headed.  Do you have any idea what could be causing these fluctuations?

Hi Sarah,

Some fluctuation is normal thrughout the day. Reasons for normal blood pressure fluctuation can include level of activity, physical or mental stress, diet and sleep pattern.  However, I recommend discussing your mothers blood pressure fluctuation with her physician as well as the symtpoms of low blood pressure.

All the best,
