Hello lindim,

Simply put, YES, it is safe to take Atenolol if you have a fast heart rate/palpitations.  In fact, in condition with an irregular, fast heart rate (for instance, atrial fibrillation), a beta-blocker like atenolol can be an important treatment!

There are only a few diseases where a beta-blocker is not a good medication to take;  these include: a slow heart rate, asthma, heart blocks, and low blood pressure.

And just remember, it is rarely a good idea to discontinue or not take a medication your prescribed without at least discussing it with your physician.

To your health,

Neil MD
