Verapamil is a medication to treat hypertension along with several other diseases. It belongs to the class of medications called calcium channel blockers. These help reduce blood pressure by relaxing the muscles in the walls of blood vessels, which in turn, increases the diameter of the vessels and reduces the pressure in them.
Verapamil is also commonly used to treat arrhythmias called atrial flutter and fibrillation. It is used to slow down the fast heart rate of these conditions which allows the heart to pump blood more effectively.
