Q: Sudden drop in blood pressure then a sudden sustained extremely high blood pressure!!!!

Help,

I am a private pilot, so I monitored my blood pressure daily. It was border line high ie 135 over 85-90. I went to bed with a 135/80. At 1:00 am I awoke with a sensation that something wasnt right. I got out of bed and took my blood pressure it was extremely low. 90/45. I was very dizzy and hot. As I walked back to the bedroom to wake my wife I realized I was going to pass out. I laid down to keep from passing out as I woke her from the bedroom door. She took my blood pressure and it was 208/110. We went to the hospital and after many tests, I was put on medicine. It took almost 4 months to get it down. I also had a 75% blockage in an artery that they put a stent in. Didnt help the blood pressure problem at all. I am still on many medications but I believe that something in my body changed that night and I am taking this medication to mask the problem. Any ideas or suggestions? The past 4 months my blood pressure has been 102/55 at rest prior to bedtime. Is this to low? I ran last night about 3/4 mile and woke with a blood pressure of 145/75 pulse was 78. My pulse never gets over 65. It stayed that wasy most of the night. I hacked up some blood this morning. Any suggestions? Please respond.

Hi Jeff, you sound like me.  I have approximately the same thing happening for the past several years, except that when my BP starts coming down from 212/101 with a low pulse, than my pulse will go up to 110-120 followed with fever, chills and diarrhea.  These episodes last for a week leaving me exhausted.  I have been through every cardiac test possible and everything comes back normal as does my blood work.  The Drs thought it was hormonal so removed my ovaries in 2005, no change, then a section of my colon was taken out with a very abnormal growth in 2007, but still I continue the same problems in 2009.  I too have the fainting like spells, when people have told me that the blood drains from my face and I feel like I am going to pass out if I don't lay down.  Every Dr has told me I have a "mysterious body" as they have no explanation for me.  Good luck on finding an answer as I have not been able to.

Hello! Have you ever heard of Neurocardiogenic sycope?  Syncope is losing concsiousness.Well I have it.  I have had fainting spells my whole life.  But, a couple of years ago I suddenly started having "episodes". I would feel nauseated, then I would feel like I was going to have diarrhea, I would get weak and my daughters would prop me up on the toilet.  The blood would drain from my face, my head would pound like it was going to explode and I would just gush in the toilet.  Sometimes my tongue and face, arms and hands, would have prickly tingles and then I would just lay on the floor until it passed.  My blood pressure shoot up to like 180/ 100, then withing a minute it would be 75/50 and I would be on the floor,,it would take about 15 minutes for it to climb to normalcy.  My children say I look like I am dying.  It is pretty miserable and scary.  Dr's thought they were siezures. Then a cardiologist did tests, a "tilt table test" confirmed the neurocardiogenic syncope.  You should check it out.  Good luck.  I still have mild episodes, but they are better.  I'm on blood pressure meds, the dr. said I may get a pace maker.  He said it can keep my heart regular during blood pressure issues.
