What causes a sudden temporary rise in systolic blood pressure while sleeping

Jacki
11/04/09

I am 57 year old female and normally have low blood pressure. While sleeping, (at least 3 or 4 times a week ) I am awakened by increased heart beat and pressure in my chest.

I started to use a wrist blood pressure cuff and noticed that the systolic rate was increased (usually for about 10-15 min) from 110 to 145.   In about 30 min I can usually return to sleep. Would you kindly give me some causes of this and should I be concerned?

Hi Jacki,

One possibility is sleep apnea.  I recommend discussing with your physician.
