While on Atenlol what should my THR be at 80 percent while excercising
ON Atenlol 50 mg my normal heart rate is 59, age 61. When I excersice I can only get to 104. What should my THR be on medication at 80 percent of my THR.
jim higgins,
Thanks for your question. Atenolol is a beta blocker used in the treatment of high blood pressure and/ or heart disease. It works by relaxing the heart's pumping action as well as slowing the heart rate. With respect to their pulse rates, however, people respond differently to beta blockers. Some are more sensitive than others, and it's difficult to predict how much a person's rate will slow, or how it will react during exercise. It's quite possible that you may not be able to reach a predicted heart rate during exercise while taking a beta blocker. Nor can a doctor tell you what your "adjusted" target rate should be on atenolol. You might have to adjust your parameters for your exercise program, using time or distance, rather than target heart rate. Certainly discuss this with your physician during your next visit.
I hope this has been helpful.
