Q: Why doesn't my cough stop after discontinuing Lisinopril? How long should it take??

I was on Lisinoprill/Hctz to lower my BP & developed a frequent tickle in my throat and a dry hacky cough. I am now substituting Hctz 25 mg. in the AM and Dilitizem 480 XR at night. I discontinued the Lisinopril about 2 weeks ago & still have the cough. I have been checked by an ENT specialist & apparently have nothing wrong with my throat. I continue to have the cough freqently at the most inopportune times & often have trouble getting to sleep at night because of the coughing.  This condition is quite irritating. Should this be subsiding by now?  Is there anything I can do to stop it?  Cough Med, hard candy, etc. seems to have little effect.  They just have to run their course of sometimes 5-10 minutes several times a day.  Would certainly appreciate some encouragement!

Thank You,

Carole

I to have been taking Lisinoprill/Hctz to lower my BP and have the same dry hacky cough.  I've been back to my doctor several times and he found no reason for the cough.  It never occured to me that it could be the medication for my BP until I read your story.  I will be making another appt with my doctor to investigate if this medication is causing the cough, as it has been disrupting sleep and comes on at the most inconvienent times during the day. Hopefully there is a solution to this horrible cough.

My Dr. warned me when he ordered Lisinopril that the cough was often a side effect of Lisinopril.  He discontinued it and prescribed Diltiazem after the cough became quite irritating.  After about a month I was still coughing & was concerned that maybe I had a lesion or some other problem with my throat.  My Dr made me an appointment with an eent specialist.  The specialist found nothing wrong with my throat and was of the opinion that the cough was still being caused by the Lisinopril.  He said that it sometimes takes weeks for that cough to subside.  I have been off of the Lisinopril since March and finally am rid of that dry, hacky, irritating cough.  There are many medicines to treat hypertension that don't cause that cough.  You just have to find the right one for you.  Hope this helps.
