Q: Am I starting blood pressure medication too early?

I am 26, 5'10" 150 lbs. I am very physically active. Had a physical a month ago and found that I had high blood pressure. My doctor told me to track my reading for a month and I range from 145/85 to 155/88. My doctor as ask I start taking 12.5 mg Hydrochlorothiazide after I dropped off the log I kept of my readings. I am wondering if I am being placed on medication a bit prematurely. We did not discuss diet and she did not even have me go in to meet before calling in my prescription. She has asked I take the pills for a month then go in for a checkup. Should I consider waiting to take medication and monitor my diet for a while or just start taking the pills? Thank You!

Hi Runnerguy77,

I recommend discussing your concerns with your physician. You do have a valid reason to be concerned and it is reasonable to try and lower your levels via diet first. The DASH diet is one very effective option.

However, discuss the pros and cons of your choices with your physician and choose what is right for you.
