i take lopressor 2x d@ 50 mg, excerise & eat very healthy - can't lose weight - any suggestions?
my pressure was running 180/90 & dr put me on hctz initially - when this did not lower/control bp - she added lopressor and now my pressure is betweed 106/60-128/74. I do cardio 30 mins every day = 2 miles of walking, also work out w/hand weights every other day. I eat oatmeal and fruit every morning - eat salads w/ chicken for lunch and fish and green vegetables for dinner. Very rarely any red meat. I and a female 6ft - large bone and weight 212. My goal is to lose 15 pounds. I understand lopressor lowers my bp which also lowers my metabolism - I was thinking of trying a low carb diet - such as south beach - any suggestions?
Hi Cougar1,
Here are my suggestions to achieve the 15 pound weight loss you are after.
1. Whole grain carbohydrates - I you eat a high carb diet, then yes, reducing your intake will be beneficial. However, I do not recommend moving on to a low carb diet. This is for a couple reasons. Do you want to be on a "diet" the rest of your life? To successfully loss weight and keep it off, you need a plan you can stick with long term. Another reason is due to study findings. Studies show isn't not necessarily the amount of carbohydrates that result in weight loss, but the quality. Individuals that consume a diet of refined grains and processed foods have a larger waist circumference. Look at your carbohydrate choices and make sure they are whole grain/high fiber. Soluble fiber is beneficial for heart health.
2. Increase your metabolism through strength training. You can learn more about how this will help you weight loss efforts here: Boost Your Metabolism for Better Heart Health.
3. Increase the intensity of your workout. (Walk faster and go further in 30 minutes.) A simple check to make sure you are working hard enough for results is the "talk test".
If you can walk and talk with no trouble, pick up the pace.
If you can talk, but need to take a breath every 3-5 words, you're right on track.
If you are gasping for breath after every word, slow down!
All the best,
