Paroxysmal hypertension
Sudden onset of paroxysmal hypertension began one year ago. I have absolutely no contributory factors, lifestyle or other diseases (save for isolated Raynaud's syndrome diagnosed 10 years ago). Tested negative, plasma and urine, for pheochromocytoma.
Been on various medication therapies: first lisinopril alone, then lisinopril, thiazide, metoprolol, then added clonidine; after that, sular, coreg, aldactone, clonidine, lasix, and tekturna. BP spiking continued at variable times of the day late morning, mid to late afternoon, and evening. BP dips 10% during sleep as measured by ABPM.Typical max levels of 210/115. (Spikes not caused by clonidine withdrawal because initial therapy did not include clonidine, and dosing clonidine never exceeded 12 hours apart.)
Recently added reserpine with good improvement. I believe episodes are best described as Page's Syndrome--characteristic blotchy red forehead, severe headache, elevated blood pressure, cold hands and torso, feverish, chills, and stomach churning. No anxiety. More like bouts of the flu.
Male 53 yrs. old.
