Q: High BP and doctors have said little. Should I see a specialist?

My blood pressure is 163/116 and I have been having severe migraines- I am not overweight and I am 32. The doctor gave me a diuretic and sent me home.

My blood pressure has generally been about 150/110 for the last 6 months and I have been given no advice by my doctors. I was sent for some blood tests and 4 months ago and it has stopped there, until the episode this week.

My cholesterol is ok, my kidney and liver are fine, as well as my blood sugars.

Should I be worried and see a specialist?

Hi Trex,

Your blood pressure falls into the very high category according the Joint National Committee.  You should be taking aggressive action to lower your levels.  If your physician is not monitoring your condition closely I recommend consulting a different physician and/or discussion with your current physician a referral to a specialist.

All the best,
