Does Ziac limit my performance in high intensity sports?

Greg
08/21/08

I'm a 44 year old male who's been taking 10mg dose of Ziac for 10+ years now.  I've always been physically active but over the last year I've been doing high intensity CrossFit workouts 3-4 times per week.  I'm noticing no real performance improvements for the past 4 months and wonder if my blood pressure med is causing this.  I eat healthy, weigh 166 at 5'10".  My cardio stamina has not improved as much as I'd like.

Greg,

Thanks for your question.  Ziac is blood pressure medication that is a combination of a beta blocker, bisoprolol, and a diuretic, hydrochlorthiazide.  The beta blocker portion of this medication can reduce the force of the heart's contractions, as well as the pulse rate.

Pulse rate is a key indicator used to measure response and performance during exercise.  Your medication may be the reason for your lack of improvement.  This does not mean that your program is unsuccessful, just that your measurement parameters might have to change.  I suggest you discuss this with your physician, and/or an exercise trainer.  Perhaps a consultation with an exercise physiologist might be helpful.

I hope this has been helpful.
