Q: Can using a different BP monitor that usually used - change your readings?

I have been using the same BP monitor for 3 years.  My monthly readings have all been below 120/80.  Usually 110/70 to 117/71.  I bought a new monitor and for the past few days my readings have been around 135/85.  Does the monitor make a difference?  Does it need to be "broken in".  I've changed nothing in my life - except the monitor.  Thanks for your help.

Monica,

Thanks for your question.  It is possible that your new machine is responsible for your higher readings.  Of course, the situation you are faced with is: which machine is more accurate?  The best way to find out is to make an appointment at your physician's office and take both machines with you.  Compare readings on both machines with readings taking by your health professional.  That will tell you which machine is more accurate.  Don't be surprised if readings from both machines differ from the doctor's.

Best wishes.
