Q: Does coarse salt raise bp more than sea salt?

My resting heart rate can be 60 bpm and I can usually have a bpof 110  to 130 over 70 to  80 but I have spikes when I get anxious or stressed which is frequent .

I try to walk for 30 - 60 minutes 2-3 x a week

I am not on any bp meds at the moment

I do have heart hx in the family- I am a Type A- female 57 years of age

I try to drink water and eat a banana a day

What else should I be doing- I thought  if I changed to sea salt it would help

Hi Ann,

No, sea salt is not a healthier choice than table salt.  From a chemical and nutritional standpoint, both are sodium chloride and you want to limit your sodium intake to 2300 mg (~1 tsp of table salt) or less to promote blood pressure control.

If you use kosher salt, which has larger crystals, you benefit because less salt "fits" in one teaspoon due to the larger crystal size. A teaspoon of kosher salt provides about 1900 mg sodium.  If you select a coarser grain salt (sea salt is available in this larger crystal form), you'd benefit from less salt fitting into a typical teaspoon so you'd slightly reduce your salt intake.

I recommend you adopt the DASH diet to promote a lower blood pressure.  Here's a link to learn more:
