Hi Connie,
Drinking alcohol will impact the effectiveness of your blood pressure treatment, especially if you are a chronic heavy drinker. Studies show drinking 1 ½ to 2 drinks per day increases your risk of high blood pressure. Drinking two glasses of wine nightly also interferes with the effectiveness of any high blood pressure medications or treatments you may be using to control your high blood pressure.
Alcohol also stimulates the release of cortisol (a hormone). Cortisol promotes sodium retention and increases potassium losses, both of which can blood pressure to increase.
I recommend cutting back to at least 1 glass per day or less. One glass equaling 10 ounces. Consider red wine due to its link with some heart benefits. Ideally, eliminate alcohol until your high blood pressure is under control.
Speak to your MD about potential interactions between alcohol and the medication you've been prescribed.
All the best,
