Q: Post Partum Hypertension that never resolved...why?

I am 28 years old. Prior to giving birth two years ago, I was always normal or hypotensive, sometimes as low as 80/40. During my pregnancy, my blood pressure was perfect, running 100/60. 5 weeks postpartum, during my visit when the doctor checked my blood pressure, it was 155/98. I also had sudden weight gain of 15 pounds in less than a week. Shocked, she ordered a bunch of tests and a urine speciman. The tests performed came back negative for any abnormalities. Unfortunately, my insurance got cancelled, so I could no longer get the other tests the doctors wanted me to have. When I finally got insurance, 6 months later, I went back to the doctor only to find my blood pressure was still high. The doctor I'd been seeing moved to another state. The other doctors did not seem as interested in seeking the cause any further, stating it especially happens to woman who are of ethnic decent. I am now taking HCTZ and Metoprolol, but they don't work. I am allergic to Ace Inhibitors. I am reluctant to take these meds as they are not working and often I have to skip lopressor because it makes me feel like I am going to faint, yet my bp is still high. I exercise and limit my salt intake. I am still in shock about all this. Why does this happen to women after a child?

Hi MissDivine,

I recommend seeking a new physician willing to investigate your situation further. Maybe it's something as simple as a nutrient deficiency contributing to the problem. Don't give up and keep asking your physician(s) questions until you get answers.

All the best,
