Can Guanfacine be prescribed for anxiety?

Thanks for your question.

 

Guanfacine (brand name - Tenex) is a medication that is used for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension).  This is the only indication for the use of this medication and should not be used for any other purpose.  Guanfacine has considerable side effects and if used over a long period of time cannot be stopped suddenly, as this can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure known as a rebound effect. 

 

So, the answer to your question is no.  It should not be prescribed for anxiety.
