My husband has reasonably normal BP reading til about 5pm when it rises to 180/95. Why?

He has tried eliminating caffiene and alcohol and has tried 6 different BP meds. this has been going on for 8 months and worries me even tho his  other daytime pressures are   in an acceptable range. His doctor has no explanation. He made an apptmt 3 months ago with a local "BP specialist"  Dr. William White, who wont see him til mid July. I am the worried wife of this 82 yo man whose father had late onset diabetes. No one has tested my husband for diabetes. Could that be the cause?
