I am 54 yrs. old and have always had great B/P. The past few weeks I have had a spike in my B/P.

Mary
11/21/08

It averages 150/95. I could tell something was amiss cause I have been feeling quite jittery lately. The only symptom I have is a painful right shoulder. It feel like a rotator cuff sprain. The pain does radiate some to my chest and down my right arm and hand.  Should I worry? I have been taking Crestor for high cholesterol (it is now 120) but have been changed to pravastatin a few days ago.

Thank You,

Mary

Hello Mary,

Good question.

Pain, especially if you are in pain while taking your blood pressure, can absolutely raise your BP numbers.  You would notice too an increased heart rate and maybe that you are breathing a bit faster.  These are normal responses to pain.  The radiating pain down your should is likely related to your shoulder injury.

Since you are still having pain three weeks out, you should definitely contact your physician for an appointment.  With this information, I am assuming you injured your shoulder with either overuse or some form a trauma to your arm.  If this pain spontaneously appeared, it too warrants a more urgent visit to your physician.  If you become short of breath, nauseated, diaphoretic (aka sweaty without reason), the pain spreads to your jaw, or other symptoms like these, you should consider going to the emergency room.

To your health,

Neil MD
