Q: sudden blood pressure rise that lasts a half hour to a couple hours, 48 year old male

heart attack in 2002(blood clot)...left main blocked 75% where it first y's off...took medicine till November 2008 and got up one morning took a drink of my soda and puff of my cigarette(have not smoked since then) and my heart took off beating very fast...sat down took some deep breaths and it went down a little ...then 10 minutes later took off again..so the ambulance was called...went to the emergency room and nothing was found wrong(no heart attack)...was told to up my blood pressure medicine...that made me groggy and a week later my blood pressure was at 90/58 so was told to go back to the dose I had been taking...wasn't satisfied so checked into hospital...tests were done and nothing different on the blockage since my last cardiac cath(year before)...did find that the pressure through the heart wasn't that great so did a double bypass and was told I had no other blockages and everything was fine(my heart should be good)...My last blood test showed cholesterol perfect and tryglicerides perfect... and frequently checking my blood pressure showed it in the 120's/70's for the first few months...and heart rate in the 70's....I have gained about 45 pounds since being out but at what I weighed before I went in it's really about 20 pounds... ever since I have been home from hospital(Dec. 1st) I have had episodes where my chest will get tight and feel like my heart wants to come out my throat...my legs will get weak and my head get light....i have checked my blood pressure on these occasions and it's around 155/88..and my heart rate will be in the 80' or 90's....the episodes aren't as frequent any more but now last longer(used to be a half hour, now might last a couple hours)...nothing sets them off...I might just be sitting watching t.v. or sitting at the computer and all of a sudden it will happen...sometimes break out in a sweat too but not all the time and sometimes get a headache afterwards...just wondering if anyone had any ideas...I asked if the heart rate problem I had in the first place was fixed when I was leaving the hospital and was told that what was done should take care of it....and have mentioned to my cardiologist and regular doctor and nurse practitioner about these problems I am having and they all seem not worried about them...so any hints would be appreciated....thanks....I take a small dose of blood pressure med. every day 12.5mg twice a day(Metropolol).....take Plavix...aspirin...20mg Celexa...20mg Zocor

Hi Thndr17, I'm having the same problem, sitting doing nothing and bam, up it goes. I can always tell by a pain in the back of the neck and sometimes my face feels tingly and tight. If I take a loreazapam (xanax) and and aspirin, it will usually come down in about 20 min. However, I've been fighting it going up and down all evening tonite. The highest was 186/90, now down to 156/64. I'm 65, so it scares me to death every time it happens. My dr. says blood pressure is hard to understand and they don't really know why it does that. Other days, I can go as low as 80/50 and feel to tired to get out of bed. So, just to let you know, you aren't alone with this. If you find out anything, would love to hear it. Good luck.
