Kidney-stone treatment linked to increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes

A Mayo Clinic study of 630 people who received a shock-wave treatment called lithotripsy to break up kidney stones has found that patients had a 50-percent higher risk of developing high blood pressure after having the procedure. The findings also suggested lithotripsy patients were four times more likely to develop diabetes. Doctors view the findings cautiously, saying this "gold standard" treatment might not be the actual cause of the patients' hypertension and diabetes. Read more »
