All I can say is that as a family we have 100% benefited in many ways sharing our story of Mark's UC to J-Pouch surgery online.  We documented his surgeries with photos and text, and we told our journey without any hesitation. We learned that we were helping our family and friends offer more support through sharing our story because it didn't seem so "private" to them (you know how nobody wants to talk about poop).  Our blog now is set up to help others through telling our story and offering great links to wonderful sites and info.
