I am a freelance writer (www.shellyheller.com), wife, mom, and native Californian now living in Boulder, Colorado. I have a degree in International Relations from Scripps College, and am pursuing a Master’s in English at University of Colorado-Denver.
In 2000, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. After months of illness and ineffective medical treatment, I was hospitalized and ultimately had an emergency colectomy (colon removal surgery). This surgery saved my life and launched me into what I consider a remarkable and surprising spiritual journey. It hasn’t exactly been fun, but oh, the things I’ve learned! In the spring of 2001, I underwent the two-part “J-pouch” (ileoanal reservoir) surgery. It was a complete success and gave me my life back.
Today, I am writing on topics related to this experience. I am currently completing the manuscript for a book, "Falling Into Place: A Memoir of Spirit, Family and Healing," an inspirational memoir about healing after traumatic illness and financial crisis. I am excited to blog for Health Central. I look forward to answering your questions and discussing my experiences, including the many shades of healing available when you have a serious illness, and the many benefits of survivor’s humor.
