Very interesting post, Jennifer. I am a person that bruises incredibly easily, I tend to get large bruises that last for a long time that will often develop what feels like scar tissue. I have had multiple people see my bruises (on my legs from playing soccer) and they tell me to worry about/watch out for blood clots. I have celiac disease, and your post makes me wonder if I should be more concerned about a clot when I get a large bruise?

I always find this as strange advice, because how does someone "watch out for" a blood clot? It just sort of...happens...doesn't it? I have heard that rubbing the bruised area from the middle to the outside can help relieve some of the problem, do you know if there is any truth to that? I am going to see my doctor in a few weeks and planning to ask him, but thought I would throw out the question now to get your take on it. Thanks!

Thanks, Jennifer, for bringing this to our attention.

Does the research study you reference give any reasons or hypotheses about why people with IBD have a higher risk for blood clots.

Cheers,

Elizabeth
