Use Online Support Groups to Work Through IBD
When you are diagnosed with a chronic or debilitating disease it can feel like you are all alone. The feeling can be compounded when you live in a rural area or deal with a disease that is relatively rare. Thankfully there are many resources on the internet that are connecting patients around the world.
Health Central is one such resource. The ability to communicate with others, post questions, discuss problems and offer suggestions can be very helpful in dealing with any illness. Illnesses that would otherwise be very isolating can be made less so by online support.
Support groups are starting to become even more than simple support and basic information for some patients. One patient group actually predicted the results of a drug trial by collecting its own data from members in a faster and more cost effective way (1). The members of the group knew not to be overly excited about the new drug press because their patient group had the facts already in the bag.
