Researchers have identified 2 genes believed to increase the risk for developing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children. These genes can be added to the list of 32 gene variants already linked to Crohn's disease

Researchers studied DNA samples for 1,000 IBD patients with childhood-onset of the disease and compared them to DNA samples of 4,250 healthy study participants.

The gene variations lie on chromosome 20 and 21 respectively. Researchers are hopeful that these findings will eventually lead scientists to refine drug targets for personalized and better IBD treatment.
