Flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy are both endoscopic procedures used to diagnose ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Both procedures use a fiberoptic tube that snakes through the rectum to view the lining of the colon. Instruments can also be inserted through the endoscope to collect tissue samples for a biopsy.
