Sigmoidoscopy is one of the standard endoscopic procedures used to diagnose Chrohn's disease. This procedure involves snaking a fiberoptic tube through the rectum to view the lining of the colon. Other instruments can be inserted to remove tissue samples. Sigmoidoscopies specifically is used to examine the rectum and left (sigmoid) colon. The procedure lasts about 10 minutes, no sedation is used and is mildly uncomfortable, but not painful.
