Q: colostomy and iliostomy on same person

My mother recently had a colostomy AND iliostomy. They said the colostomy would only get mucus and everything else would run thru the iliostomy. Now all of a suddent she has a very nasty stinky poop substance in the colostomy bag. Why would this be happening? And, have you ever heard of someone having both a colostomy and iliostomy at the same time?

Hi Cheryl,

Yes, there are situations where both procedures are done at the same time.

Since your mom has seen changes like these she really should call her doctor and either make an appt. to follow-up on these changes or try to talk to the doctor's nurse.

For IBDers, any time we have any major changes in our BMs we really need to follow up with our physician. This is the best advice I can give you.

With kind regards,

Elizabeth
