Hello, Bob.

Wow; things sure have been tough for you, especilly lately. I'm sorry.

To get right to your first question, a healthy, average adult has about twenty five or so feet of small bowel (intestines). Though it may seem as if getting rid of what you think is hurting you, is the answer--and, it also seems as if you have plenty to spare-- simply wacking parts of it off won't necessarily help you get better.

Unless you have strictures (blockages or narrowings in your intestines, usually from being inflamed, over and over again) that need to be removed, it's not likely that you need another resection of your small bowel.

Have you told your doctor how bad your symptoms have become? If not, please do! It may be time to change therapies; try something different. Have you been on Remicade or Humira? Cimzia? (Any of the biologicals?) Make an appointment to sit down and discuss new options.

I'm sensing a lot of frustration and unhappiness--which, under the circumstances, is totally understandable. Have you considered checking out IBD support groups in your area? You can find them through your GI doc's office, or on line at www.ccfa.org .

Good luck,

Hope

Hi ya Bob

Your entry sounds like a page from my book. You dont mention whether you smoke or not but if you do, you must quit now. Cigarettes do indeed exacerbate the Crohns. I do believe that If I had quit sooner, I wouldnt have had to have 3 small bowel resections. Since I quit, about 11 yrs now, I have had flares but NO surgery. The uncontrollable bowel movements many not be Crohns. Mine are a side effect from the 1st surgery where the illeocecil valve was removed, so there is nothing left to hold the movement back. Any way, lately I have found that taking acidophilus capsules (the live cultures in yogurt ,*not a yogurt fan) and eating a banana with it, have helped TREMENOUSLY with controlling my bowel movements. Its been really nice to be able to get thru the nite without have to get up and change the bed and myself. I am actually experiencing days and nites that I dont have to wear Depends. I hope this helps. Hope you feel better really soon
