Jacky, you should ask your doctor for specific tests that they think would isolate the situation to diverticulitis.  Whether or not this latest bout for you and your husband was viral or something else, you should get a specific answer about the diverticulitis or get a second opinion.  In terms of salmonellosis, this usually includes a lot of diarrhea and vomiting -- in addition to abdominal pain.  Your doctor could tell you whether the symptoms you and your husband had are consistent with a different GI virus, but it may not have been salmonella-related if you did not have a lot of diarrhea or vomiting.   Here's a link to some info on diverticular disease testing.  http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/diverticular/#doctor
