Q: can metronidazole cause diabetet when you have been on it for a prolonged period

While I've not heard of a link between metronidazole and diabetes I'm also not a doctor. This is a question you should explore with your doctor, plus any signs or symptoms that you are experiencing.

As Elizabeth noted, above, there doesn't appear to be any published medical literature that mentions a relationship between taking metronidazole, and later developing diabetes.

 

I would guess that the reason is, within about eight hours of a dose, your kidneys have removed almost all of the metronidazole ("Flagyl"). The little that remains is excreted in your stool.
