Q: does IBS cause smoky body odor?

Hello,

I'm a freshman in college.

For a while now, I've noticed this smoky body odor being emitted from me.

I do have IBS but have not taken treatment for it.

Could IBS be the cause of my Smoky Body Odor?

I shower daily, wear clean clothes.

It smells like I smoke, when I dont. It's like an aroma that follows me.

Thank you-please help

Hello 2332,

I've never heard of a smoky body odor with IBS, in particular. But, our bodies do produce odors naturally and it could be from something you are eating or drinking that your body is not able to properly break down. You may want to try changing your diet a bit and see if it alters this odor. Try eliminating things like cow's milk, soy, wheat, fast food, alcohol, etc. from your diet for a few weeks and see if the situation changes.

Cheers,

Elizabeth

What you may have is TMAU - Trimethylminuria.  It is commonly known as the fishy body odor, but can also be manifested as a smoky body odor.  Of course, see your health care professional for a diagnosis

I am a mid-fifties female, and this just started happening to me.  I am not a health care professional, but this is what I found in my research. The literature says options are to: take low doses of antibiotics, avoid foods that have trimethylamine;use slightly acidic detergents; or take chaocoal and/or copper chlorophyllin.

A good resource is the National Human Genome Research Insitute.
