Q: what causes IBS with sometimes uncontrollable bowels ?

About 2 yrs ago I had massive doses of antibiotics IV 24-7 for one week. Ever since then I have had a real problem periodically with my bowels and now I am having times when I cannot control them especially if I am doing any kind of exercise. Can you tell me what would cause this??

Hi, Suzanne; thanks for writing.

I'm not clear about whether or not you have UC, since, though your question's title asks about IBS, you tagged it under "IBD" and "Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms."

That being as it may, when you describe having some fecal incontinence, and state, "I am having times when I cannot control them especially if I am doing any kind of exercise," it makes we wonder if you might actually have a problem with your anal sphincter--the tight ring of muscles around your anus might not be holding firm when you are bouncing and jumping around.

Have you discussed this with your doctor, particularly the incontinence issue? It seems like a rectal exam is in order.

My best,

Hope
